Janet and Darryl Greene’s new Trolley Stop Cafe is located in the heart of the Highland hamlet at 58 Vineyard Avenue, just off Main Street in the downtown area. It’s a family business, with Janet running the front of the house and Darryl in the kitchen. Daughters Alanna and Geneva provide table service and son Nathan helps out when he can. No strangers to the hospitality business, the Greenes were longtime owners and proprietors of the now-defunct Inn at Orchard Heights in New Paltz.
Two local New Paltz business owners who depend upon buildings for their livelihoods have been honored for beautifying their own Main Street properties. Engineer Andy Willingham and architect Allen Ross, each with offices in a refurbished Main Street home, were given Partners in Preservation awards at the January 22 New Paltz Village Board meeting in New Paltz.

Matthew Vassar barely acquired any formal education, being kicked out of night school after throwing a bottle of ink at the schoolmaster who had just smacked him in the head with a ruler. A niece named Lydia Booth, who had begun her teaching career as a private tutor and opened the Cottage Hill Seminary on Poghkeepsie’s Garden Street, was the first to plant in Matthew’s mind the notion that a fully accredited college for women was direly needed.
“We’re constantly getting better and better,” said Schatz president Stephen Pomeroy. “We invest in new technologies that enable us to switch from part to part very quickly.”
