The DEC last year set about on a plan to completely revamp the whole trail system in the Kaaterskill Falls vicinity. In this first in a series of columns about the trail, we look at the history of one of the most popular natural destinations in the Catskills.
This is the story of two remarkable people who, 51 years ago, envisioned a place where people from near and far could come and research their genealogy or learn about local history – a place where membership was not required, with regular hours, a knowledgeable staff and a collection of research materials that were guaranteed to be there when you needed them.
Words from a lost age. “The present campaign has certainly been carried on, in a very ladylike manner. Never before have we observed such courtesy in a political campaign. There has been little mudslinging, our opponents have treated us in a very gentlemanly manner.”

The story is not just the quintessential autumn Catskills tale, but also echoes many stories of a hero’s journey to another world and back again.
On the afternoon of Nov. 4, 1940, Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s motorcade swept into Kingston, after traveling north over the Wurts Street Bridge on Route 9W. It stopped in front of the Gov. Clinton Hotel before the president, on the eve of his re-election, gave a brief speech at Academy Green, across the street. Local businessman William O’Reilly was there and stepped right up out of the crowd to the president’s car to film the scene. “People have said, ‘I can’t think of your father without that black movie camera in front of his face,’” recalled his daughter Patricia Murphy, former president of Friends of Historic Kingston (FHK).
Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize for Literature, well deserved from this view, and a portion of the body of work on which he’s been judged was created in Woodstock.
