Hudson Valley school districts reflect diversifying population

Looking at local numbers, a common pattern is a white population in 1995 dropping significantly, often around 15 points or so, with the largest increase found in the Hispanic population, and more modest increases in other groups. No local district we looked at saw an increase in the share of the white population or decrease in the share of the Hispanic population.

Choice for families is clear: vaccinate or home school

As schools all over the state wound down for the summer, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation that removed religious vaccination exemptions for children attending school. The law was the latest in an effort to contain ongoing measles outbreaks in several New York counties. It mandates that unvaccinated students at public, private, and parochial schools have 30 days from their first day at school to provide proof they have received the first dose of required vaccinations.

Onteora bans Confederate flag, swastika after past incidents

The Onteora School Board voted 6-1 last month to ban displays of the Confederate flag and swastikas, revising the district’s code of conduct to include the symbols under prohibited conduct that “endangers the moral well-being, health, safety or welfare of others,” after incidents involving both symbols over the last two school years. The decision came just over a year after the board passed a resolution denouncing the flag as “a symbol of intimidation, harassment and hate.”
