Hoppy Quick was approved to operate a chainsaw seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. A neighbor isn’t happy.

Acknowledging not everyone will be happy, trustees voted 7-2 to replace the existing building to meet the library’s future needs and address serious deficiencies in the current space. The public will likely have the ultimate say though, as a bond would be needed to fund the project.

On a snowy Monday, the day the cold spell broke, I rode the gondola, named “Catskill Thunder,” to the top of the mountain. Since the weather got in the way, I can’t report on the spectacular view, which will be essential to the lift as an attraction in other seasons, but I can describe the ride.

Several people spouted facts about chainsaws: their decibel levels, their emissions, and figures including one that purported an average 2.5 chainsaws per resident in the Town of Olive.

With the Catskills in a deep freeze since before Christmas, local plumbers are working overtime to restore frozen and sometimes ruptured pipes in homes and businesses. For some people, this problem is a major annoyance. For others, it’s a crisis.

Recommendations for future flood resilience include relocating the town hall complex out of the flood zone; enlarging two bridges on Fox Hollow Road only if damaged or scheduled for replacement; monitoring the stream bottom at a bridge on Creekside Road and cautiously removing sediment if warranted; elevation of homes or electrical structures within buildings in the flood zone.

The town hopes the new requirement will address overcrowding, which led to a large amount of garbage and complaints from neighbors.
