The unselfishness that’s such a fundamental element of every team sport is an extremely important lesson we can take with us when the buzzer sounds (or the final out is made or the winning run scores) and we reenter the rest of our lives. Teamwork. Trust. Self-knowledge. Physical, emotional, and mental resourcefulness. Being so much in our bodies. And, most importantly, the full awareness and enjoyment of the living moment.

Woodstock library board set to approve architect’s contract

Woodstock Library Trustees plan to vote at their next meeting, 7 p.m. Thursday, April 18, on a $584,000 contract with Dobbs Ferry architect Stephen Tilly for designs on a new 12,000-square-foot library building amid lingering concerns by some that the board hasn’t been transparent enough and hasn’t given enough consideration to a renovation.

When Che Spiotta was eleven years old, his mom found an announcement on her email feed about tryouts for the cooking show MasterChef Junior. “My mom asked me, ‘Do you want to do this?’” he says. “We debated for a week or so. I thought it would be awesome but, like, I’d be missing school, and what happens if this goes further? Then we were just like, why not? Why not do it and see what happens. If it’s fun, we’ll keep doing it. If it’s not…? Then when I was on the show, it was fun.”

Onteora Board, public, challenge budget proposal

Trustees of the Onteora Central School District board of education, along with parents and students, voiced their displeasure over aspects of Superintendent Victoria McLaren’s proposed budget for the upcoming school year at the April 2 board meeting at Phoenicia Elementary. Some expressed concern that that very building might eventually be placed on the chopping block, along with a popular teacher and special education services.

Optimism rules at Ars Choralis. The chorus’s program last week, which I heard at Overlook Methodist Church on March 30, was entitled “The Poets Speak: Mending a Broken World.” The musical selections were interspersed with inspirational poetry, well read by Gilles Malkine, and included numerous brief works with positive themes.
