Baseball was always his game. “You know, I really don’t know why. I just liked the idea of getting outside and smacking a ball around and being around people and having fun with it.”
Colby Amell, Saugerties’ wrestling team’s lightest member at 99 pounds, will be representing the Sawyers in the state wrestling tournament on February 24 and 25 at the Times-Union Center in Albany.

After months of practice and perfecting their programs, more than 20 skating club members from Saugerties are ready to compete in the 2017 Empire State Winter Games that begin Feb. 3 in Lake Placid.
This is the 54th anniversary of the club and its annual tradition of honoring those who have made a significant impact on Saugerties sports history.
Coaches at competing schools believe that because the Lady Sawyers lost their two best players they might not be very good this year. Coach Melville suggests they may be in for a shock.
Unlike the last several years when the Sawyers had a number of tall players who could dominate under the basket, this year’s team is a bit shorter, but much faster.
“Anytime you experience that type of success it can translate into the classroom, to other teams, and hopefully to this wrestling team.”
Saugerties High Schools ran roughshod through the Section 9 Class A football season and into the semi-finals of the Sectionals this year. But all that came to an abrupt halt Friday night at Dietz Stadium in Kingston with a stunning last-minute loss to Goshen, a team the Sawyers had beaten earlier in the year.
