Only two ballfields at the Cantine Memorial Complex in Saugerties lack lights, and a group of parents of softball players are raising money to reduce that number to one. The fundraiser will be held June 2.
A white envelope caught my eye as I approached my baseball locker. I picked the envelope up, not knowing what to expect. I read the headline of the letter it contained. Who were the Saugerties Stallions? Where was Saugerties?
It was quite a week for the Saugerties High School baseball team.
The Saugerties Sports Hall of Fame held its 54th annual induction ceremony last weekend, with five new members taking their places alongside the hundreds of local sports legends that came before them. The enshrinement, which took place at Diamond Mills, saw many of those legends join in the celebration in the large banquet hall for the nearly sold-out event.
They call it “Sawyer Strength.” It’s the slogan on a tee shirt that students at Saugerties High School have to earn.
If not for his amazing recovery from a car accident as a young man, Derek Whittaker might not be here for his induction into the Saugerties Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2017.
Freer has held a Saugerties High School varsity sports record for more than three decades.
You’ll see familiar surnames emerge when you scroll through a list of the members of the Saugerties Sports Hall of Fame. For the third straight year and the fourth year out of the last five, a member of the Dodig family will make the cut. Randy Dodig, Sr. will be inducted as part of the hall’s Class of 2017.
