The Lady Sawyers are on a roll.
Fans of the Saugerties boys’ basketball team packed the high school’s gym February 20 to watch eighth-grade sensation Dior Johnson become the youngest player in state history to reach the 1000 point mark, and reach it in the shortest amount of time in Saugerties basketball history.
The Saugerties Youth Hockey Mustangs won three of four games, and won the Bronze Medal Game against the Tri-County Eagles with a score of 3-1. In March, the Mustangs will compete in the Tech Valley Hockey League playoffs. The girls’ hockey team, The Fillies, also earned a bronze medal.
Bowling is such a quintessential community activity that sociologist Robert Putnam titled his study of the decline of American civic life “Bowling Alone.” If bowling participation is an indicator of community health, Saugerties, which just added a school team due to overwhelming demand, is thriving.
It’s going to be an interesting year for the Saugerties Lady Sawyers’ basketball team. The team will have no seniors, and will be led by a handful of juniors who have been playing together since fourth grade.
Saugerties High School boys’ basketball coach Mike Tiano thinks it’s important that his players have game on the court. It’s even more important for him that they have game in the classroom.
Phil Brown will take over for Dominic Zarrella, who is stepping down after 23 years of coaching.
It was the best game they’ve played all year. It was also the Sawyers’ last game of the year. It took the Saugerties Sawyers football team eight games to come together to play a complete game on offense, defense and special teams. But they did it.
Running back Hindes hopes to lead the Sawyers deep into the playoffs.
