The Saugerties High School varsity girls basketball team finished their regular season last week at 13-5, closing out the final week with three crucial wins over tough opponents. With two weeks between their last regular season game and the beginning of the playoffs, the Sawyers are maintaining their momentum with practices, scrimmages, and crossover competition.
The Empire State Winter Games torch will pass through Saugerties on Monday, January 27, passing through the hands of each of the over 50 athletes who will attend the sporting event in Lake Placid on Jan. 30.

In its very first year, the Saugerties Outlaws youth tackle football 12U team is heading to Gatlinburg, Tennessee later this month to compete in the Battle in Rocky Top national tournament.
The 2019 Sawyers, again under Coach Drew Carpino, are hoping to build on the successes of last season’s squad, which went 5-5 overall, including a four-game win streak.
Edge, who grew up in Saugerties and amassed 1016 points during his varsity career for the Sawyers, graduated in 2015.
The Saugerties Stallions saw their seven-game win streak snapped last week. What followed was a topsy-turvy run of games that left them in the middle of the East-Division pack but still well in the playoff hunt.
By at 4-0 vote, with one abstention, the Saugerties Town Board voted to replace the deteriorating roof and walls of the Kiwanis Ice Arena, for an estimated $1.3 million. Construction is expected to begin in a month and to be completed in September.
