The village of Saugerties will sponsor the annual New Year’s Eve celebration in the village on Tuesday, December 31 from 10:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. The event will include a countdown video and ball drop at midnight at the corner of Main and Partition streets with DJ Riley Cornelison. Many local restaurants will be open late. Some streets will be closed starting a half hour before the ball drop. Attendees are advised to dress warmly and bring a folding chair to sit on. Party favors will be available.

The Sussin Family of 123 Patch Road in Saugerties once again invites the public to view its annual Christmas light show, which can be seen every night from Nov. 29 to Jan. 1, 5-10 p.m., weather permitting, with Santa usually making appearances Friday and Saturday nights.

This Sunday, December 8, from noon to 5 p.m. Saugerties will once again celebrate Holiday in the Village. It’ll be the culmination of a three-day seasonal village weekend.
On Friday, December 6 from 5 to 10 p.m., according to the Chamber of Commerce, Saugerties will have its First Friday Holiday Weekend Kickoff. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 7, will be the Village Shopping Day. And Sunday, of course, will be the parade and assorted special Holiday in the Village events.

The Holiday in the Village parade, set for Sunday, Dec. 8 this year, will include puppets created during an after-school enrichment program with Patrick Wadden of Arm of the Sea Theater and Jodi Adams-Hill, a Saugerties school art teacher. Saugerties junior-high students created the masks, and will help bring them to life in the parade.

Monday, November 11 — Veterans Day — was clear and cold for the traditional ceremony at the Saugerties American Legion Post 72. In keeping with the tradition, the ceremony began at 11 a.m., the date and time the cease-fire ending World War I was signed: 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918.

American Legion Post 72 celebrated its 100th anniversary last week, with a banquet on Wednesday night, a parade and celebration at the post on Saturday and a musical tribute to the soldiers who served in “The Great War” and a re-enactor who portrayed a nurse who treated the wounded.

Saugerties American Legion Lamouree-Hackett Post 72 turns 100 this year. It’ll be celebrating its centennial Wednesday, Oct. 16 with a banquet, a parade and a musical evening.

The annual Saugerties Mum festival persevered despite almost continuous rain last Sunday, October 6. While the crowds may have been diminished, a continuous flow of people came to admire the flowers, hear the band, and patronize the vendors in Seamon Park.
