Saugerties prepares for beach season

“The Glasco Fire Department was named our Heart of Gold recipient for their patience and understanding when working with the people who live at Glasco House and Arc Apartments,” wrote Brenda Meeks, a residential director with The Arc.
The affair, held at the Diamond Mills ballroom, had a 1920s theme, with club officers and many patrons dressed in the style of the period.
Volunteers use a device called the Plusoptix, is a hand-held computer that scans for vision problems, including astigmatism and eye misalignment.
Funding for the post-prom party was low ten years ago, so a car show was suggested as a way to raise the necessary money to keep the party going. The party, at the Wood ‘n Wheel, is a drug- and alcohol-free event established 22 years ago in response to the overindulgence of generations past.
Along with local resident Heidi Jo Brandt, club members have been raising money to add more activities for children.
Vanessa Biegel, 11, a fifth grader from Saugerties, can probably tell you a thing or two you didn’t know about the women’s suffrage movement in the state, which was so strong that New York women won the vote in 1917, three years before the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the American constitution in 1920.
They say you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family. But for residents of a Saugerties co-housing community, it seems it is possible to choose one’s extended family.

The Hudson Valley Vegans will host a fundraising brunch to benefit Saugerties Animal Shelter on Saturday, April 29 from noon to 2:30 p.m. at Saugerties Reformed Church, 173 Main St.
