Ellie Leffler, a lithe pre-teen with wild curly brown hair, moves with poise and distinction beyond that of the typical 12-year-old. Running through a “kata” — a Japanese word for a choreographed series of blocks and offensive movements — her form is perfect and her mind, it appears, is blank or elsewhere. She exemplifies “mushin,” a Japanese word for “no mind” that describes the ideal, reflexive way in which a kata is performed once it has been rooted in a student’s muscle memory.

Although other Saugerties bakeries undoubtedly put out some great goods, the loss of Lachmann’s Pastries in 1999 after a 60-year presence on Main Street left a gaping hole in the town’s palette. Until this year, when Drew and Bridgette Pineiro set up shop in Barclay Heights to revitalize Ralph Lachmann’s previously retired recipes.

“I want people to come in here and feel like they’re going to spend time with their girlfriend, or at a friend’s house. I want them to be comfortable.”

Change has arrived at the Sawyer Savings Bank in Saugerties. Cindy Saporito, senior vice president and chief operating officer of the bank she started working at as an auditor fresh out of Ulster County Community College 33 years ago last month, has been named to the 147-year-old financial institution’s board of trustees.

It was an unusual sight for Saugerties, or anywhere. Throughout the weekend, women with satin frocks and ball gowns draped over their arms left her bridal shop at 160 Ulster Ave. in droves.

The resort, which will be called Wyldwyck River Camp, includes a 120-seat restaurant, 72 rooms in multiple cabins, agricultural fields, staff housing, artists’ studios and stables for horse-riding on the property, as well as utilities and service areas. It’s located off Liberty St. behind the Glasco Firehouse, abutting the Hudson River. Developers plan to start construction as soon as possible.
