Second annual Saugerties music fest highlights addiction and suicide issues
Aug. 18-19 Hope Rocks offers onsite counseling, speakers offering their personal experiences and a myriad of activities, including: approximately 50-plus live musical performances; a motorcade; a 5k and 10k run; softball; volleyball; basketball; tennis; pickleball; human foosball; art exhibition; and, crafters. New to the 2018 festival is a walk- and bike-a-thon, children’s area, petting zoo and t-shirt design contest.

The Saugerties Artists Studio Tour, now in its 16th year, portrays the heart of Saugerties, its most recognizable streets and antiqued structures, and of course emanations of its soul.
New show at Saugerties’ Emerge Gallery explores multiple takes on the ideal
Abstrakt: A Group Exhibition of Abstract Art, opens at Saugerties’ busy Emerge Gallery this Saturday, July 7. Some 44 local artists will explore varieties of mediums and styles for a showing through the month, including a preview this Friday evening, July 6.
Breathe life into a stone: Macbeth at Opus 40
Artistic director Matt Mitler said he is fascinated by the mythological archetype of the trickster, an entity who destroys to make way for the new. “In some spiritual practices, it’s considered ‘holy destruction,’” Mitler explained, “from Baldr in the Norse myths to Jesus.” In the search for a text that would embody destruction leading to creation, the company turned to Macbeth. They approach the play’s violence as a kind of ritual combat, designed to create a purifying catharsis for actors and audience. Dzieci Theater Company will present Makbet, their Eastern European-flavored version of the Shakespeare tale of ambition and revenge Saturday, July 7.
Saugerties’ Augusta Savage exhibit will be open through July
Lift Every Voice, an exhibit presented by the Saugerties Historical Society featuring seven sculptures created the Saugerties resident, civil rights activist and sculptor opened on Feb. 17 and will be on display until this August at the historic Kiersted House, 119 Main St.

This book is a wonderful and often brilliantly written resource for music fanatics or casual fans who may want to learn more about the city’s deeply rich rock history.
Saugerties marks national poetry month
Activities include a combination poetry walk and window shopping event with a correspondence contest, a series of poetry readings over the course of the month and an hour-long reading of a new translation of the Odyssey written by Emily Wilson, the first penned by a woman in the over 60 translations of Homer’s text into English.
Sculpture in the village marks springtime in Saugerties
Despite the cruel season, Saugerties has gotten a jump on spring, thanks in part to a village-wide display of sculpture including a knock-out show at Cross Contemporary in honor of International Sculpture Day.
