Each school year, a member of the student council is selected to serve as the student representative to the school board. Dhandi, treasurer of the Class of 2017, said she enjoyed serving in the role, which served as a liaison between the student body and the school district.
Wrestling academy opens in Saugerties
“It’s a dream come true,” says Glasco resident Joseph DePola as he looks around his newly opened New York Wrestling Academy (NYWA) at Simmons Plaza on Route 9W. With its karate school, fitness center and now the wrestling academy, the plaza is quickly turning into a center for physical fitness.

Saugerties car show attracts more than 500 vehicles, 12,000 car lovers
Rain may have spoiled the pre-party for the annual Sawyer Motors Car Show, but by the time show-day arrived on Saturday the weather was fabulous, with low humidity and plenty of sunshine. More than 500 cars, trucks and motorcycles, and an estimated 12,000 people jammed Main and Partition streets.
Some Saugerties merchants see a decline in their businesses
“Business has been declining for the last three years,” said one business owner. “It just seemed to go away. And this summer it’s just getting worse.”
Neighbors of proposed Saugerties cell tower continue opposition
About a dozen speakers of the 20 or so area residents at the Saugerties town planning board meeting cited health studies showing damage to people living near the towers. To blame, they said, was radiation emitted from cellphone transmissions.
Saugerties considers additional parking for village
The two biggest shortages in the Village are public restrooms, and parking. With the opening of the Saugerties Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center on weekends and its public restroom, that problem appears to have been solved. At their July 3 meeting, Village trustees worked towards relieving a portion of the lack of adequate parking.
Saugerties’ bigger and better beach
State and local officials recently opened the rehabilitated Saugerties Beach, which cost close to $300,000 to repair after it was damaged by storms Irene and Lee and superstorm Sandy.
