Operation SOS (Support Our Service people) will prepare packages of comfort items for members of the American military deployed to combat/hostile areas on Tuesday, March 20 at 3 p.m. at the Senior Center on Market St. in Saugerties.
Some 400 to 500 students at the Saugerties Jr./Sr. High this Wednesday participated in a nationwide walkout in the senior-high gymnasium as tribute to the 17 students and staff members in Parkland, Florida who lost their lives to gun violence on campus a month ago. Students packed the bleachers and court.
When children head to the Saugerties chapter of the Boys and Girls Club after school in the evenings, they receive more than simply homework help and supervision. Through a program called Royals, they are also learning performance skills.
Administrators are supporting the students. “We want to help the kids coordinate something so it’s done in a safe fashion and it’s not just mayhem, and that they also get to make their points,” said superintendent Seth Turner.

It’s an imperfect world, but that doesn’t mean we can’t take measures to improve it. Some people prefer certain kinds of improvements. Others suggest other improvements. The people who prefer some kinds of improvements criticize the people who don’t share their preferences, and vice-versa. In the public political sphere, things can get nasty. In friendly Saugerties, they often seem to get nasty. That’s a fact of life.
