Opening a significant new aspect to its business, HITS Inc., which runs horse shows in Saugerties as well as several other locations across the country, is now in charge of arranging events for the new Exposition Center at the New York State Fair up in Syracuse.
The eyes of those walking Main and Partition Street will be snagged on the bright matte and metallic paint jobs of hot rods from the past, from 1 p.m.-6 p.m. Sunday July 8.
Abstrakt: A Group Exhibition of Abstract Art, opens at Saugerties’ busy Emerge Gallery this Saturday, July 7. Some 44 local artists will explore varieties of mediums and styles for a showing through the month, including a preview this Friday evening, July 6.
Saugerties is a sports town, and not just for the kids. While youth leagues tend to rule the roost at the Cantine complex, grownups get in on the action through the Saugerties Athletic Association. In the summertime, that means softball.
Artistic director Matt Mitler said he is fascinated by the mythological archetype of the trickster, an entity who destroys to make way for the new. “In some spiritual practices, it’s considered ‘holy destruction,’” Mitler explained, “from Baldr in the Norse myths to Jesus.” In the search for a text that would embody destruction leading to creation, the company turned to Macbeth. They approach the play’s violence as a kind of ritual combat, designed to create a purifying catharsis for actors and audience. Dzieci Theater Company will present Makbet, their Eastern European-flavored version of the Shakespeare tale of ambition and revenge Saturday, July 7.

If you think Saugerties is worth showcasing, you aren’t alone — CGI Communications, a Rochester-based marketing firm that has filmed “video tours” of municipalities throughout the country approached Saugerties officials to put together a promotional video to be displayed on the town’s website.
Block’s efforts bring Saugerties to the wider world, and gets the wider world to come and spend money in town.
It is the year of the chipmunk. These pocket-sized creatures are having a banner year, invading my yard in great numbers. I have a spending posse. As a group, they’re officially named a scurry.
