Child Victims Act allows for lawsuits to be filed much longer after incidents

After years of resistance from New York State lawmakers, the newly Democratic-controlled legislature has passed a bill that extends the statute of limitations for youthful victims of sexual assault to bring suit against their abusers and against the church, school, or other institution where the abuse occurred. While this change is good news for people who are ready to confront perpetrators, the process of bringing such a suit can be daunting.

Jane St. Amour, currently business manager at the Spencer-Van Etten school district near Ithaca, will officially take on the role of business manager of the Saugerties school system on July 1. “Saugerties is a great school district with a supportive board of education and community, and I am looking forward to getting to know everyone and immerse myself in the excellent things that are happening here in Saugerties,” said St. Amour.

Over a year after an Old Stage Road family awoke to a crossbow bolt embedded in their living room wall, a bloodied axe on the floor of their home, a broken window and a torn screen on their porch, Johnnie Lancaster of the Town of Ulster, 25, was sentenced to 20 years in state prison and five years of post-release supervision after being found guilty of first-degree burglary and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

While Saugerties organizers continue planning for the third annual Hope Rocks Festival this August, two new Hope Rocks events are planned for early next month: The Hope Rocks Hardball Invitational, a high school baseball tournament on May 4; and the Hope Rocks Grand Gala, a fundraising event on May 10 with a focus on the Hope Rocks mission: To “illuminate the darkness of addiction and suicide.”
