A planned session on racial equity scheduled for the January 24 meeting of the New Paltz Central School District Board of Education didn’t go entirely as organizers may have intended, but community members organized around this issue appear to have gotten closer to achieving one of their goals, the establishment of a board committee that would oversee such issues in the district.
Several students expressed discomfort, one likening it to being Jewish and living in “Hitler Hall.” Members of the community tended to express support for having a dialogue, but more likely to defend the wider legacy of the town’s founding families.
Some of the topics discussed include the district’s English as a New Language program, the racial equity initiative, the tragic loss of another student, and new standards.
Drug education never left America’s schools, but it hasn’t been stressed since the days of D.A.R.E. With record numbers of young people in rural areas dying of opiate overdoses, the Highland School District is stressing an all-grades substance abuse education program.
