Sometimes the most enduring voyages of one’s life can begin with a small, seemingly innocuous decision. Where do you want to hike today? What trail shall we take? In fact, that was the question, posed 150 years ago, that led to the creation of what is now considered one of the world’s Top Ten greatest destinations: the family-owned-and-operated Mohonk Mountain House Resort and Spa in New Paltz.

Rail trail bridge in Gardiner poised for redecking this summer

The work needed on the 1910 deck plate girder pedestrian overpass that carries the rail trail over Forest Glen Road consists primarily of redecking. Rotted wooden decking, old railroad ties and fencing will be removed and replaced with more durable concrete decking and new safety railings. Trees that are pushing against the bridge abutments will be removed and trail erosion nearby the bridge repaired.

Elting Library in New Paltz throws Mardi Gras fête

The onset of a snowstorm dampened the turnout but not the Carnival spirits of dozens of families who attended the Mardi Gras celebration on March 3 at the Elting Memorial Library. The walls of the library’s community room were covered with wallpaper evoking the ornate cast-iron balconies lining the streets of the Big Easy; display cabinets were filled with Mardi Gras masks; and book aisles were festooned with purple, gold and green decorations.
