New Paltz Earth Day engages, educates & entertains lively crowd at Reformed Church

On Saturday, April 21, Earth Day came a day early to the grounds of the Reformed Church of New Paltz, and it seemed like the community didn’t want to wait one day more to celebrate the return of spring’s greenery and warmth after a lingering winter. With bright blue skies, temperatures in the low 60s and plenty to do and to learn, both the weather and the venue couldn’t have been more welcoming for a big turnout.

There are four main criteria that must be met: Non-Discrimination and Staff Training; Patient Services and Support; Employee Benefits and Policies; and Patient and Community Engagement. “It’s very prescriptive. You have to change the language in your policies on things like human resources, visitation and residents’ rights, to make it explicit that the facility does not discriminate” with regard to gender identity as well as sexual orientation.

In its heyday, the Open Space Commission scored two major successes with the permanent protection of two major tracts of Gardiner agricultural land: the Kiernan Farm, on Bruynswick Road, and the Hess Farm, on Sand Hill Road, where agreements for the purchase of development rights with the help of the Open Space Institute were finalized in 2010 and 2014 respectively.

Plots are owned by individual families, but the board tasked with oversight has the power to decide certain types of adornments are not consistent with the character of the neighborhood. In zoning, that might be a light-up sign. With cemeteries, a meaningful memento.

The Town of New Paltz Environmental Conservation Board commends the New Paltz High School seniors for convincing town and village board members to pass resolutions aimed at reducing plastic straw use in our restaurants. On Earth Day (April 22 ) the group invites the community to meet at 2 p.m. in front of the Commissary at 11 Church Street in New Paltz, to initiate a Plastic Straw Challenge to restaurants and bars.
