New Paltz Historic Preservation Commission Art Exhibit now on exhibit at library

Works by Cami Fischer, Lana Privitera, Maureen Rogers and Agnes Devereaux took top honors in the fifth annual exhibit, which calls for submissions of “artwork that focuses on and is inspired by local and area historic landmarks, landscapes and architectural details, and explores the theme of preservation, and life within a historic context.” Works will be on display in the Elting Memorial Library’s Ron Steinberg Reading & Meeting Room until May 4.

Plastic bag mummy cleans streets in New Paltz

On Earth Day, April 22, you may have seen a plastic bag mummy, Plady, picking up trash while riding a mini plastic car, Toxicar, down Main Street in New Paltz. This was not an early celebration of Halloween, but performance art. Plady and Toxicar were created by the Taiwanese artist Maxine Leu, an MFA sculpture student at SUNY New Paltz, and enacted by performer Sanford Fels, a BFA sculpture student also at SUNY New Paltz.

New Paltz teen photo contest winners are announced

A reception to announce the winners was held on Tuesday evening, April 9. In the end, “Down Dusty Roads” by Leo Portuese took the prize in the other category, “Beauty” by Grace Witte took the prize in the landscape category and  “The Flute” by Anna Kimber took the award for best portrait.

New Paltz school budget proposal ups tax levy 4 percent

The New Paltz Central School District will ask voters to approve a $63,640,000 budget for the 2019-2020 school year. The vote will be held at the high school on Tuesday, May 21. The budget reflects a 2.98 percent increase over the current 2018-19 budget and includes a 3.98 percent tax levy increase.
