A gathering of some 50-60 people in front of Elting Library as the “Rise Against Hate” rally began on Saturday, June 8, soon swelled to a crowd of nearly 200 like-minded souls, who came out on a sunny afternoon to stand in solidarity against recent incidents of racism and anti-Semitism in New Paltz schools.
Most encounters with an ambulance are quite pedestrian: the flashing lights and wailing siren signal it’s time to pull the car over and let the members of the rescue squad pass. What’s a momentary pause in the lives of those New Paltz residents might represent a critical moment in the life of someone else, as that ambulance is bringing to their door a crew of professionals with sufficient equipment to do anything that might otherwise happen in a hospital emergency room.
The incident occurred last week on Wurts Ave. in the village of New Paltz. Police are still investigating, and so far have not released any information on the suspects.

This is the latest in a series of steps intended to revitalize the plaza. The controversial parking lot redesign was a required prerequisite to amending the site plan. That work, intended to bring the lot up to current safety standards, is still brought up by locals without prompting because the new configuration remains unpopular. It’s yet to be seen if any plans to update ShopRite itself will be brought to a Planning Board meeting.
The motto of McFoxlin’s in New Paltz is: “Fancy beer, fancy coffee, no fancy people.”
There were two large tables decorated with maroon-and-white New Paltz logos and draperies as backdrops for this prestigious ceremony, where students were called up one by one, their sport and college named and then photos taken of them signing, alone and with their families, friends and fellow teammates.
A rally to “Rise against Hate” will be held this Saturday, June 8 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in front of the Elting Library, 93 Main Street in New Paltz.
After several years of work, plans are coming together to replace the aging community-built playground with another community-built playground in the same location.
“It feels like a gut punch to not be able to graduate on the field that we’ve been imagining for 12 years,” said senior class president, Evan Holland-Shepler.
