New Paltz School Board intends to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day

One board member said changing the focus of the holiday was important because “how America was discovered is our origin story. It introduces and codifies who is considered American and who is not. It is often a child’s first lesson about encounters between people of different races and cultures. We owe it to the children of this district to faithfully and bravely examine the version of history we’ve chosen to tell.”

“We all share the blame, living in our bubbles while we shun, demoralize and demonize those who disagree with us. We’ve been viewing distorted versions of each other through computer screens while we calcify our own sense of self-righteousness. We have to find a way back to recognizing common humanity in those who disagree with us, and find a way for them to recognize ours.”
