Ulster Dems pick Ryan for county exec

Pat Ryan scored a decisive victory in his bid to become Ulster’s next county executive when the county’s Democratic Committee handed him the nomination and a spot on the ballot in an upcoming special election. In weighted voting at the Best Western in Kingston, Ryan beat out fellow Democrat Pat Courtney Strong 16,117 to 11,660.

The 32nd annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade is set for March 10 at 1 p.m. The parade, co-sponsored by the Ancient Order of Hibernians Fr. Con Colbert Woulfe Division 1 and the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 5 of Ulster County, will be preceded by the two-mile Shamrock Run starting at Kingston’s Academy Green at 12:50 p.m.

Before last week, it seemed inevitable that the Kingston City School District would have to purchase voting machines ahead of the budget vote and School Board elections in May, with the only variable how much money they’d wind up spending. But following a compromise between the two parties, the district will be allowed to use the machines this year, with future use depending upon how things go.
