Ryan vetoes ‘Dan Torres Law’

Ryan vetoes ‘Dan Torres Law’

The Ulster County Legislature passed a measure forbidding county appointees from holding elected office 12-11. But County Executive Pat Ryan said this week that he will veto the measure, which has — intentionally or not — been taken as an attack on Deputy County Executive Dan Torres, who’s also a New Paltz town councilman.

Jan Harrison’s thoroughly modern surrealism

The pastel-and-ink paintings and porcelain-and-clay sculptures of Kingston-based artist Jan Harrison defy stylistic pigeonholes, but their otherworldliness and dreamlike logic relate to Surrealism, the 1920s Paris-based movement that celebrated the unconscious as the root of the creative impulse and exulted in the element of surprise.

Kingston After Dark: It’s all about delivery

The big show I want to plug this week in none other than rising Rochester act Mikaela Davis, who comes to BSP Kingston Wednesday, Nov. 27. Her Rounder Records album Delivery was produced by Grammy winner John Congleton (St. Vincent, David Byrne, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah) and features a wide array of influences. I really enjoyed the title track video on YouTube, an evocative black-and-white performance video that reminded me of a weird shared space between Norah Jones piano jazz, sentimental indie rock and personal revelation.

Ulster County Legislature censures Hector Rodriguez

For the first time in its history, the Ulster County Legislature voted to condemn one of its own, New Paltz Democrat Hector Rodriguez, for sexual harassment and predatory behavior. Rodriguez’s expressionless face loomed over the room, projected onto a wall by a too-close webcam that he used to Skype into the meeting, while legislators voted 17-5 for his censure. His screen went black during the voting; Rodriguez abstained from the vote and made no comment.
