Laurie Metcalf does an extraordinary job insinuating glimmers of forgivability into an eminently unsympathetic mother to Saoirse Ronan’s character in Lady Bird. It’s clear that Ronan’s Oscar-nominated 2015 performance in Brooklyn was no fluke.
Friday-Sunday, Nov. 24-26: This Poughkeepsie estate was once home to artist and inventor Samuel F. B. Morse. The site’s museum exhibits on his dual accomplishments as a painter and inventor of the telegraph and Morse Code are well worth the visit. This carefully curated show of some 40 vendors offers a range of handmade goods for purchase.
St. Nicholas may have started out, historically, as a bishop in fourth-century Asia Minor with a reputation for strategic philanthropy, somehow making his way to the Netherlands to become Amsterdam’s patron saint; but it’s arguably New Yorkers – particularly residents of the Hudson Valley – who are largely to thank for the jolly fat man’s international ubiquity.
We may not know the words per se, but the sound transports. This season’s musical landscape features all genres, including two Messiahs and a holiday concert by the internationally fêted jazz phenom Cécile McLorin Salvant at Bard. Take it from Wynton Marsalis: “You get a singer like this once in a generation or two.” Hark the herald.
Friday-Sunday, Nov. 24-26: From Acorn Hill Farm to Yankee Distillers and a hundred other vendors in between, alphabetically speaking, the fifth annual Farm & Flea Holiday Market will fill more than 9,000 square feet of floor space with handmade goods and farm-fresh food products.
Sean and Dennis Nutley create retail success at bluecashew and Green Cottage.
Friday-Sunday, Nov. 17-19: There are more than 20 million military veterans in the US. Even so, their experiences are largely something that civilians can only imagine. An opportunity to bridge that gap is one of the reasons that organizers of this weekend’s artistic outpouring at the FDR site are encouraging civilians to attend, and experience all the activities planned alongside current and former members of the Armed Forces and their families.
Wednesday, Nov. 22: A delightful original reggae and rock-steady band in the Desmond Dekker mode with a dash of Motown, the Big Takeover has been packing literally all of the local venues for all ten of those years, stepping up its national touring in the last few.
Sunday, Nov. 19: This salon-style event will feature author and historian Rosemary Nichols and the famed musical duo Jay Ungar & Molly Mason. Well-known for their expert curation of American folk music, Jay and Molly’s music was featured in Ken Burns’ PBS landmark series The Civil War.
