The street is the oldest continuously inhabited street in America with its original houses. The proposal would allow for more all-street programming in the historic district and protect the stone houses, whose foundations have been affected by years of vehicular traffic.
Town Supervisor Greg Helsmoortel said the not-for-profits “were doing okay,” but Marge Block, who heads the historical society, said the cut would affect her organization “a great deal.”
About the only complaint to come out of the Holiday in the Village celebration in Saugerties was that there was not enough parking. This complaint is often made when a large event is held in the village.

While Mayor Steve Noble said Monday the new plan for city parking, which will double meter rates and end free parking in municipal lots, will offer long-term discount rates for residents and commuters, he said determining the amount of the resident/commuter discount will have to wait until the city picks a vendor to install payment kiosks in the lots.
