Loyal customers dismayed by closure of New Paltz’s Just-a-Buck

It was a model that seemed to fit the disparate values of New Paltz residents: a dollar store run specifically to provide jobs for disabled individuals who often struggle to find employment, despite being qualified. It addresses both cost-conscious concerns and the desire to help people with a disadvantage to get a leg up. Unfortunately, Just-a-Buck has resulted in a loss on the books of Ulster-Greene ARC ever since it was opened in 2014, and that’s a loss which has been determined not sustainable.

Trustees of the Onteora Central School District board of education, along with parents and students, voiced their displeasure over aspects of Superintendent Victoria McLaren’s proposed budget for the upcoming school year at the April 2 board meeting at Phoenicia Elementary. Some expressed concern that that very building might eventually be placed on the chopping block, along with a popular teacher and special education services.

The proposed $65.8-million Saugerties school district’s draft budget for the 2019-20 school year represents an increase of roughly $1.8 million, or 2.83 percent, over the current year. The proposed budget comes with a potential tax-levy increase of 2.67 percent. School officials will try to deal with a revenue shortfall of $705,423 prior to the school board meeting scheduled for next Tuesday, April 9.

U.S. Rep. Antonio Delgado (D-Rhinebeck) took another step towards fulfilling a campaign promise this week, and made a bid for a leadership role in the House’s restive freshman class with a new bill that would allow Americans of all ages to buy into government-backed “public option” health insurance plan, using the same Medicare providers network available to Americans over age 65.
