With the assistance of housing not-for-profit Rupco, the Town of Saugerties has applied for a grant through the New York Affordable Housing Corporation to help homeowners with repairs to at least 20 single-family homes in the community at no cost to the town or village.
Plans call for Central Hudson to replace a circa-1930’s underground natural gas regulator located underground with an above-ground apparatus in a vacant lot. Neighbors fear it will cause pollution and be an eyesore.
The plan to save Taliaferro Farms would involve a $387,000 payment from the town’s open space funds, Scenic Hudson and Ulster County to the property owner to forego development rights.
Acknowledging not everyone will be happy, trustees voted 7-2 to replace the existing building to meet the library’s future needs and address serious deficiencies in the current space. The public will likely have the ultimate say though, as a bond would be needed to fund the project.
By contracting with a single trash hauler to service the entire town, local officials aim to cut costs and wear and tear on town and village roads. But some residents say they should be allowed to choose their own hauler.
The program will provide bystander training for bar staff as it aims to prevent sexual assaults before they occur and reduce the overall number of sexual assaults that take place.
The plan envisioned by the mayor would pull together public and private investment, previously planned improvements and newly conceived ones to create a more attractive, more stable and more user-friendly street.
The town’s rec chief had suggested replacing the entire building, which could have cost over a million dollars. The roof replacement, he estimates, will cost about $500,000.
When the previous vote was taken, aldermen believed a supermajority of seven votes was required for passage. The measure received five votes, but a court later ruled that was enough. Now, three aldermen are saying if the council had known a simple majority would be sufficient, the outcome may have been different.
The bookstore originally used the president’s alleged disparaging phrase for a display of books by African and Latin American authors, but after criticism, changed it to the older and decidedly unironic “E pluribus unum.”
