The cause of the three-alarm fire at 18-20 Russell St. that claimed the life of 46-year-old Tanya Conklin and seriously injured four others on Saturday, April 21 had yet to be determined by investigators as of Wednesday. According to Police Chief Joseph Sinagra, who spoke Monday, April 23 there is “no indication whatsoever at this time that it was an intentional act.”
After 15 months of legal struggle with the town, Gregg and Douglas Weeks have decided to close down Gregg’s Custom Sawing on 168 Patch Road.
Contentious debate over a proposal to convert the former Kingston alms house at 300 Flatbush Ave. into supportive housing for low-income senior citizens continued at an April 16 public hearing before the Kingston Planning Board.
Another lawsuit — the fourth, thus far — has been filed to stop the creation of town water district 5 on Plains Road in New Paltz.
The vote was met with cheers from the 20 or so supporters of the center who sat through the four-and-a-half-hour meeting to witness it. The unanimous decision by the board marked the end of a long and contentious approval process for a project that met strong opposition from some neighbors who expressed concern about the building’s scale and its impact on a largely residential street.
“Save Tillson Lake” is the name of a new ad hoc advocacy group of citizens alarmed over the Palisades Interstate Park Commission’s plan to “dewater” Tillson Lake, a 23-acre reservoir near the foot of the Shawangunk Ridge. The commission says the lake’s dam is unsafe.
It’s meant to cut back on waste. Reportedly, enough plastic straws are thrown out each year to fill Yankee Stadium nine times over. The village and town boards passed the resolution after the issue was raised by local high school students.
Problems include: uneven front steps, no railing, a tree that needs to be removed, no hot water and no gutters.
Trustees opted for a new building and to save a small historic portion that currently houses some staff office space. But there’s no design yet. That will come in the fall.
Since the 2016 the program has received 36 referrals for youth who have been trafficked or are at high risk of being trafficked.
