New Paltz Community Foundation hands over funds to Millbrook Preserve

Along with the passing of the torch came the passing of the check, as representatives of Millbrook Preserve, Inc. and the New Paltz Community Foundation gathered on Friday morning, August 2 at the Preserve’s trailhead on North Manheim Boulevard. The ceremony marked the Preserve’s coming of age as an official not-for-profit organization, legally able to do its own fundraising.

Rockslides in East Kingston

Two recent rockslides on Main Street in East Kingston are being monitored by Ulster town officials, Callanan Industries and state authorities. According to town officials, the pair of rockslides appear to have been caused by the collapse of an historic cement mine opening created in the late 1800s, and were not related to blasting, which was not happening when the slides occurred. Callanan suspended all blasting on Aug. 12 to ensure the safety and stability of the slopes overlooking Main Street.

New Mohonk Consultations chair Marty Irwin plans peace conference

For more than a century, Mohonk Mountain House has served as a gathering place for local, national and international leaders to focus on ways of promoting peace, environmental protection and civil rights. Founded in 1869 by the Smiley family, this year marks the 150th anniversary of the Mountain House. In honor of this milestone the owners have teamed up with Mohonk Consultations to offer a weekend-long peace conference from November 1 through 3, titled “Creating and Sustaining Peace.”

Police cuff Saugerties dump owner

The owner/operator of several controversial construction and demolition dumps in Saugerties, which the town, the state Department of Environmental Conservation and, most recently, the Ulster County Department of Health have being trying to close for months, was arrested and charged with illegal dumping, Saugerties town police said. But according to Town Supervisor Fred Costello Jr., trucks bearing construction and demolition material are still coming on and off the property as of Tuesday, Aug. 6.
