Several teachers, staff and parents of the district turned out to speak at a recent school board meeting. All requested that the board create a policy that would prohibit wearing or displaying the Confederate image that many see as racist.
In the trial run earlier this year, local residents, called “community ambassadors,” took their students on hikes, visited museums, attended performances, visited local sites like Walkway Over the Hudson and shared meals in restaurants and their homes.
He brings nearly 20 years of experience to New Paltz, most recently as principal at Kent Primary School in Carmel, a K-4 building.

For the second straight summer, Cahill Elementary School morphed into the English as a New Language Academy, a five-week immersive program for elementary-school students for whom learning English is part of their educational experience. Fifteen students participated in the ENL Academy this summer, up two from last year.
The incoming student population is approximately 1338. School begins Sept. 6.
In a response to a petition calling for a change to the name of the campus dining hall to honor a long-time employee, SUNY New Paltz president Donald P. Christian said he’d ask the university’s Diversity and Inclusion Council to look at the pros and cons or retaining or replacing the names of campus buildings named for the town’s earliest Huguenot settlers, who were slaveholders.
They’re baaaaack. More of them than ever, almost: nearly 1,150 first-year students and more than 900 transfer students were welcomed to the SUNY New Paltz campus on Moving-In Day last Thursday. According to university officials, that makes this one of the largest incoming undergraduate classes in the college’s history.
