New Paltz Middle School is closed for the remainder of the day, Monday, October 16, due to a minor electrical fire in the cafeteria prior to the arrival of students. Rerouted buses took students directly to the high school auditorium, from where they were transported home again at 10 a.m. after parents were notified.
Since becoming principal, Osterhoudt has used eccentric challenges to inspire the children to complete the summer reading. She tells the students: “If you’ll read, I will do anything.”
After years of renovation and construction, months of anticipation, and weeks of students getting acclimated to their new digs, the Kingston City School District held an official unveiling ceremony at Kingston High School last week, showing the public for the first time how much has changed.
In one school in the district, 20 percent of the students are from different countries. The proposal is meant to counter “misinformation” and ensure the students and their families understand it’s safe to attend local schools.
At a recent forum, the consensus seemed to be that parents want the district to hire someone innovative, sensitive to cultural and economic diversity and willing to commit to living in the Highland district.
“I wanted to be the best teacher I could be, the best coach I could be,” says Dodd. His professional peers seem to concur that he hit his mark.
The school board has cited studies suggesting the change would be beneficial for students.
Trustees aren’t rushing to change the dressing code just yet.
The school board gave a first reading to a policy that would restrict the use or operation of unmanned aircraft systems, commonly referred to as “drones” or remote-controlled aircrafts, anywhere on school premises without prior written permission of the superintendent of schools.
