Issues of discrimination appear to be coming to a head in the New Paltz schools.
A video created by a pair of students, along with many of their classmates and some staff members at the Hudson Valley Sudbury School, has gone viral. It’s not only raising awareness about the self-directed form of education, but has also tapped into the larger national and global conversation about how kids learn.
The resolution denounces but does not ban the flag, noting First Amendment rights. However, Superintendent Victoria McLaren said disciplinary action for its display might be taken on an “individual basis.”
“College is a formative time in young people’s lives and it is critical that we provide our students with the necessary tools to avoid making bad decisions with potentially life-altering consequences.”
The district is trying to deal with Confederate Flag apparel without stepping on free speech, and warm-weather clothing without targeting girls.
“Communication will be key” among cadres and the district-wide committee, said the district superintendent, who mentioned racial issues specifically.
Students will attend a full day of school, with a 17-student class of four-year-olds at both Mount Marion and Cahill elementary schools. Cahill will also host a 14-student class for three-year-olds.
The New Paltz Central School District recently held a community forum for parents, students and community members to offer their input about the ongoing initiative to establish racial equity in the schools.
