Paula Dutcher, a Shandaken native, finds that being a woman gives her a positive edge in the building trade, although the presence of a female carpenter/contractor is often hard for men to process. As a mother, Jenna Rodgers, an electrician in Shandaken, appreciates the flexibility her work provides. Both of them feel the building trades are ripe for the entry of more women.

The development, called Heartwood, is a 70-unit boutique lodging facility, farm and restaurant on 141 acres, capable of hosting over 100 guests at one time. It’s located on the northern bank of the Shawangunk Kill, next door to the Tuthilltown Spirits distillery.

Whitecliff Vineyard & Winery in Gardiner celebrates 20th anniversary

It’s been 20 years since Michael Migliore and Yancey Stanforth-Migliore launched Whitecliff Vineyard & Winery in Gardiner. But it was 20 years before that Michael, shortly after beginning a career with IBM as a semiconductor engineer, first began experimenting with planting grapes on the land. “The winery was originally meant to be a retirement business for Michael,” says Yancey, “but the joke is always that the one thing he’s failed miserably at is retirement! That has not happened.”

The resort, which will be called Wyldwyck River Camp, includes a 120-seat restaurant, 72 rooms in multiple cabins, agricultural fields, staff housing, artists’ studios and stables for horse-riding on the property, as well as utilities and service areas. It’s located off Liberty St. behind the Glasco Firehouse, abutting the Hudson River. Developers plan to start construction as soon as possible.
