June 22–July 29: Who knew, back in the summer of 2013, that the new musical (then known as The Hamilton Mixtapes) that upstart hip-hop composer Lin-Manuel Miranda was workshopping on the Vassar College campus would soon become Broadway’s biggest hit, with ticket prices spiraling into the stratosphere? Powerhouse Theater has a track record as a stage-monster incubator too impressive to discount lightly.

Director Debra Granik to screen Leave No Trace at Upstate in Woodstock

Saturday, June 23: Granik is best-known as the director and co-writer of Winter’s Bone, Jennifer Lawrence’s breakout film, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. In Leave No Trace, Thomasin McKenzie plays Tom, a teenager whose war vet father, Will (Ben Foster), is so rattled by post-traumatic stress that the only way he can cope is to live off the grid.

Two places in New Paltz to see movies under the stars this summer

Water Street Market has been showing free outdoor movies in its courtyard every summer Monday night for a decade now. The season is up and running already, with the last film slated for Monday, August 27. And this year, the third Saturday of each month will also bring an opportunity to view a free movie under the stars in New Paltz, at the Field of Dreams park pavilion, where the first of three Saturday night movie screenings this summer will be Saturday, June 16.

Saturday, June 9: Actors & Writers will present a staged reading of Gertrude and Claudius at the Arts Society of Kingston. Based on a novel by John Updike, the play returns the Bard’s classic characters to the stage, as Claudius and Gertrude’s forbidden passion plays out behind the back of Prince Hamlet’s father, the soon-to-be murdered king.

Saturday, June 9: The series starts with Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. The price of the excursion is $40 per show ($35 each if you buy a package of three movies). This includes a cruise to and from the island, departing from the Floating Dock at the Beacon Institute; your choice of a short self-guided tour of the island or Local Legend Lecture when you arrive; and the film screening.
