The humble bowl of chili con carne was once the province of mid-19th century cowboys and the incarcerated in Texas. Designed to stretch out the cheapest cuts of meat into something edible, the savory stew is now mainstream, devoured with gusto by most of the population coast-to-coast.

Saturday, Jan. 25: Bard’s US-China Music Institute presents The Sound of Spring, its first annual Chinese New Year Concert featuring Bard College’s The Orchestra.A special Chinese New Year public reception to welcome in the Year of the Rat before the concert starts at 6 p.m.
Sunday, Jan. 26: The jewel of Marlboro welcomes the legendary saxophonist and composer Chico Freeman, who has spent more than 40 years in the center of the modern jazz maelstrom, mostly as a leader and as sideman with McCoy Tyner, Lester Bowie, Jack DeJohnette, Wynton Marsalis and others.
Through January 31: “In terms of painting, the dot and the line are the essence of what creates all form … They’re very related to the conceptually driven particle points. Dots and lines are points and waves. They’re not abstractions, but descriptive of what a landscape is, which is energy.”
