On view through August: Ever since she was a child, when she would go on summer road trips with her family, Mary Anne Erickson has been photographing roadside attractions and collecting souvenirs and memorabilia from the motels, restaurants and mom-andpop tourist sites she visited.
Both Chef Linda Soper-Kolton and Chef Sara Boan graduated from the Natural Gourmet Institute in Manhattan before landing their dream jobs at the Catskill Animal Sanctuary, tucked away between Saugerties and Lake Katrine, where they teach the vegan way of compassionate cooking. Now the dynamic duo is making the rounds at bookstores and other venues to launch a cookbook, Compassionate Cuisine: 125 Plant-Based Recipes from Our Vegan Kitchen.
Through Aug. 18: Shear Madness has an interesting history. It’s essentially a food-free stage version of the now-ubiquitous participatory phenomenon known as murder mystery dinner theater, which itself is rooted in games that became popular in Great Britain beginning in the late 19th century, following a notorious 1860 child-killing known as the Road Hill Murder.
One of Rosendale’s most popular downtown eateries and watering holes, the Red Brick Tavern, has been sold to new owners and is currently closed for renovations. The transfer of ownership from Billy and Michelle Loughlin to the group who run the Santa Fe restaurants in Tivoli, Woodstock and Uptown Kingston took place in late June.

They are a reminder of the great scene we have always had here which has reflected the colorful musical variety of local interests. These are renaissance men who have schooled themselves in a wide array of musical culture, as we all should. When I grew up it was cool to learn about funk and try to play it, to care about jazz, to not be dismissive of learning things from other cultures. It actually makes you cooler.
An abandoned paper mill from the late 19th century that has been of late a waterfront canvas at Tina Chorvas Park for graffiti has been fenced off and slated as the future permanent home for the nomadic puppeteers of the Arm of the Sea Theater and an educational site for children.
