Air Supply to play UPAC in Kingston

Friday, August 10: In 2010, the prevailing Australian kings of soft rock Air Supply released their most recent collection of new songs, Mumbo Jumbo. A surprisingly arty and electronic/symphonic effort somewhat reminiscent of the formal experimental pop of 10cc, with a nod to Jim Steinman’s micro-operatic mode, Mumbo Jumbo would probably challenge your sense of what Air Supply is all about.

Mary Frank, who will be feted at the reception for her new exhibit of works, 2 p.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, August 11 at Elena Zang Gallery in Shady, and has just released a new book of her epic photographic works, Refuge, has always been an activist — from the early battles over civil rights, our involvement in foreign wars, the rise of feminism, and ongoing battles against world hunger and thirst to the most recent separations of refugee families at our borders and attacks on Planned Parenthood.

Friday-Saturday, August 3 and 4: This year’s Poughkeepsie O+ places an emphasis on busker-style street performance, hip-hop, reggae/dub, indie-rock, folk/bluegrass, electronic and spoken-word. Notable performers this year include Lara Hope & the Ark-Tones (rockabilly), Bright Dog Red (improvisational) and JAHG (rap).

Saturday, August 4: After founding the Runaways at the age of 15, Jett went on to score eight platinum and gold records and nine Top 40 hits with the Blackhearts. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee was also ahead of the curve on the industry side, founding her own Blackheart Label in 1980 after being rejected by a bevy of major labels who must still be smarting about it.
