Friday, August 10: In 2010, the prevailing Australian kings of soft rock Air Supply released their most recent collection of new songs, Mumbo Jumbo. A surprisingly arty and electronic/symphonic effort somewhat reminiscent of the formal experimental pop of 10cc, with a nod to Jim Steinman’s micro-operatic mode, Mumbo Jumbo would probably challenge your sense of what Air Supply is all about.

Mary Frank, who will be feted at the reception for her new exhibit of works, 2 p.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, August 11 at Elena Zang Gallery in Shady, and has just released a new book of her epic photographic works, Refuge, has always been an activist — from the early battles over civil rights, our involvement in foreign wars, the rise of feminism, and ongoing battles against world hunger and thirst to the most recent separations of refugee families at our borders and attacks on Planned Parenthood.
August 5-12: A flamenco performance is an exorcism of sorts. The dancers, singers and musicians who practice this artform are forever in quest of a quality called duende – a word that has no exact English equivalent.
The production, set in Spain during the Spanish Civil War, will be one of 13 events at the ninth annual Voicefest, held August 3 through 5 at the outdoor stage in Phoenicia’s Parish Field and other venues around town.
Friday-Saturday, August 3 and 4: This year’s Poughkeepsie O+ places an emphasis on busker-style street performance, hip-hop, reggae/dub, indie-rock, folk/bluegrass, electronic and spoken-word. Notable performers this year include Lara Hope & the Ark-Tones (rockabilly), Bright Dog Red (improvisational) and JAHG (rap).
Friday, August 3: Jamie Saft & New Zion and other musicians, dancers and performance artists who live and work in Kingston will perform at this celebration of the reinvigoration of Midtown.
Saturday, August 4: After founding the Runaways at the age of 15, Jett went on to score eight platinum and gold records and nine Top 40 hits with the Blackhearts. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee was also ahead of the curve on the industry side, founding her own Blackheart Label in 1980 after being rejected by a bevy of major labels who must still be smarting about it.
Saturday, August 4: Wassaic Project programming runs year-round, but on Saturday, the Wassaic Project hosts a jubilant, wild flagship celebration: a mix of art, music, dance and film. Performers include Underground System, Innov Gnawa, Square Peg Round Hole, Chuño and Miles Francis.
