October 2-28: The book Cummins will be working on has to do with the unearthing and exposing of family secrets; hence, her tenure in the window, in which she herself is exposed, “sort of parallels the book — it’s a simulacrum of the book,” she says.
Saturday, October 6: The violinist and songwriter Deni Bonet burst onto the national scene in the ’90s as the first-call violinist for such era-defining artists as REM, Sarah McLachlan, the Indigo Girls, Warren Zevon, Cyndi Lauper, Robyn Hitchcock and on and on.
Opening Reception at Art Centro, Friday, Oct. 5: Water from the Missouri and Cannonball Rivers at Standing Rock will fill the vessels, as well as water from other important places of struggle against the “Black Snake” (fossil fuel infrastructure), including our region’s own Muhheakantuc, the Hudson River. The exhibit will close on Saturday, October 27 with a traditional water ceremony by Standing Rock Water Protector Chas Jewett.
Sunday, September 30: Donations will support Grace Smith House, Hudson Valley House of Hope and Amicable in America. On-Site Counseling will be available throughout the course of this event.
September 28 – 30: Handcrafts start at $5, paintings at $50. All purchases are 50% tax deductible. Sales directly support the livelihoods of literally hundreds of artists, and proceeds further benefit numerous programs in Chermaitre—a mountain village in Haiti unreachable by road.
Saturday, September 29: Featured events include open studios, readings and performances by Byrdcliffe’s artists-in-residence and a tour of White Pines, the beautiful 1902 Arts & Crafts home of Byrdcliffe’s founders.
Saturday, Sept. 29: Bid on contemporary and classic photographs by Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke-White, Cornell Capa, Kenro Izu, Vivian Maier, Mary Ellen Mark, Weegee and more, as well as a portrait session with Elliott Landy.
Sunday, September 30: The New York City jazz guitarist Ben Monder was already the owner of a humming 30-plus-year career as leader and sideman when he was tapped by David Bowie to be one of the featured voices in the ensemble that made Bowie’s arrestingly strange final album, Blackstar. When Bowie taps, you fall down. He was the Miles Davis of rock — with feelers on every street corner looking for the first signs of fresh new things to borrow and glom upon.
Friday, September 28: “Doors & More” band Feast of Friends joins forces with the long-running New Paltz-born “Dead & More” Deadbeats for a night of experimental nostalgia and some of the most classic and transgressive rock ever committed to tape.
Sept. 28-30: From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, the 26 participating artists will either have their own studios open to the public, or be exhibiting their work collectively in pop-up galleries or other spaces on loan for the tour.
