When a traveling memorial wall visited Saugerties recently, members of the Kingston Veterans of Foreign Wars post, led by member Ken Swart, attempted to get in touch with the families of Ulster County’s Vietnam dead. In the process, they found Elizabeth “Betty” Jeszeck, who is, to their knowledge, the last surviving Vietnam War widow in the county.

The former New Paltz Middle School teacher is now a coordinator at the Literacy Center at SUNY New Paltz.
In a world where the centuries-old art of running a printing press has been replaced by things that use lasers and making pages on computer screens, Mark Herb of Mark IV Printing will soon dot his last I’s and cross his last T’s. Next month, once he finishes his final orders from loyal customers, Herb will be closing up shop after over 50 years of production in Saugerties.
Rudi Azank has spent over half his short life thinking (obsessing) over Samuel Beckett’s paean to “nothingness” in the Irish ex-pat’s French language play “Waiting For Godot” (“En Attendant Godot,” written in 1948 and performed in too many places and languages to try to count).
Block’s efforts bring Saugerties to the wider world, and gets the wider world to come and spend money in town.
