Few of the players who turned up on Saturday morning will get a call to come work with the first unit, and even fewer might get into a Stockade game this season. But with the team looking to build not only for the present, but also the future, club officials were pleased with what they saw on the frosty Dietz grounds.
The club, which had faced the possibility of closure last year before a sale to a new group of investors, will also be open to the public for the first time this season.
Liz Praetorius was among the first wave of girls at Saugerties High School to have the chance to compete in three different sports: volleyball, basketball and softball. A new activist group plans to focus on harnessing grassroots energy to address city-level issues like housing and police-community relations. Rise Up Kingston also plans to address big-picture issues, like racism, at a local level. The group will host a launch party and fundraiser at Rough Draft Bar and Books on Monday, April 16.
Joe “Base” Quirk, a name synonymous with local sports, will be inducted into the Saugerties Sports Hall of Fame this weekend. Quirk earned his way in not only because of his own playing days but also because of his dedication to Saugerties sports ever since.
Born on his father’s farm in Highland six days before Germany’s Red Baron was shot down, Edwin Millard Ford, Kingston’s iconic historian, will mark his centenary with a gathering of some 125 invited guests at White Eagle Hall on April 15.
Thursday, 4/19 and several dates afterward: In his ongoing 100 Novels project, Youd specializes in retyping novels (with the same make and model typewriter used by the author) from beginning to end in locations that are charged with literary significance in the author’s biography. The retyping of Mary McCarthy’s The Group will constitute the 56th novel that Youd has typed, and is one of several titles that he will undertake in the Hudson Valley in 2018.
“I think we’re in a particular moment right now, with all of the young entrepreneurs coming to live here and revitalizing a lot of the Hudson Valley. They’re doing so many interesting things, all connecting to our past, in a way: They’re bringing back chicken farms, working with bees and there’s even somebody in Accord beginning to make barrels again – a trade that went on there for years. There is so much happening here now, and I would love to record some of their stories, and capture this moment in history as it’s happening.”
