Artist Edwina Sandys, Churchill’s granddaughter, to discuss her Berlin Wall sculpture at FDR site
Saturday, Sept. 21: It was Winston Churchill who, in a 1946 speech at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, coined the term “Iron Curtain” to characterize the growing divide between the capitalist and communist wings of the World War II Allies. Churchill’s granddaughter, the noted artist Edwina Sandys, MBE, has called the Berlin Wall “the physical embodiment of the Iron Curtain.” After the Wall was dismantled in 1989, the reunited German government gave Sandys her pick of eight of its concrete panels to use as a medium for her art.

Filming on rocks in streams and behind the crosshairs of rifle scopes, cousins Signor and Forrest aim to bring their game, their guns, their grill and the oft-overlooked bounty of the Hudson Valley to your device via their cheekily named YouTube channel “Hudson Valley Forrests.”
The Lotus Seed Project
Olivia Treubig’s “The Lotus Seed Project” is primarily an initiative to introduce yoga and mindfulness to more people, she says, doing so in settings other than the traditional yoga studio and with a focus on community and healing. Her efforts extend to both adults and children.
SUNY Ulster program helps women better their lives
The New Start for Women program at SUNY Ulster is more than just academic courses; currently, 16 area women enrolled in the program will receive a bevy of tuition-free programming addressing things like conflict resolution, test-taking strategies and resume workshops.
Great Wallkill River Race & Festival set for September 14
Community athletic competitions are fun in and of themselves, but especially meaningful when their purpose is to raise funds and awareness for a good cause. A new such venture, which its organizers hope to become an annual event, will make its debut in New Paltz on Saturday, September 14: the Great Wallkill River Race and Festival.
Kingston firefighters set 9/11 remembrance
The Kingston Fire Department will hold its annual marking of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks next Wednesday, Sept. 11 at Fireman’s Park on Washington Avenue. Attendees are asked to gather at 8:30 a.m.; the ceremony will begin at 8:46 a.m., when American Airlines Flight 11 hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center. The public is encouraged to attend.
New Paltz playground project needs financial assistance and more volunteers
The playground at Hasbrouck Park in New Paltz is at the end of its serviceable life and volunteers are being asked to help rebuild it, as was done 25 years ago. The New Paltz Village Board and the DPW assessed the playground’s condition in 2015, which is what put this plan into motion.
