Circus helps raise funds for New Paltz playground

Words cannot capture the feeling in one’s gut as an acrobat steps climbs onto a board that teeters atop a stack of blocks and cylinders that wiggle in all directions, nor can they fully convey the joy of watching a dog leap over his tumbling master or ride a scooter like a biped. Circuses are designed to invoke emotions and stimulate all the senses, down to the hair raising on the back of the neck and the tongue salivating for cotton candy. Saturday, Feb. 22: This year’s Sojourner Truth Life Walk goes from Port Ewen to Kingston, and you can catch the bus from Dietz Stadium. The Hudson Valley heroine’s image is being added to a 15-foot-tall bronze statue planned for Central Park that includes Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. A statue of Truth by herself is soon to be erected near the Highland entrance to Walkway over the Hudson. The circus is coming to New Paltz – not just any circus, but the Cole All-Star Circus, founded in 1938: a mom-and-pop version of Cirque de Soleil, with acrobatic performances, jugglers, trapeze artists, fire-eaters and more. They are a fundraising organization dedicated to entertaining entire families while at the same time raising money for charitable causes. In the case of New Paltz, this would be for the new Hasbrouck Park Playground fund.
