Saturday, Dec. 7: Though the event has happened annually for the past 23 years, and has turned into a destination for out-of-towners, drawing some 20,000 participants last year, Hudson’s Winter Walk has prided itself from the get-go on a spirit of spontaneity.

Saturday, November 30: The Children’s Maritime Parade will wend its way down Broadway: giant puppets, grumpus heads, star lanterns, fish, flags, boat models, stiltwalkers, long rippling banners representing the River itself, Rip Van Winkle and of course Sinterklaas. The traditional Dutch antecedent of Santa Claus will make his voyage from Kingston (representing Spain) to Rhinebeck (representing Holland) on the Hudson River’s only solar-powered boat.
Family’s 43rd Thanksgiving dinner opens its doors 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, November 28 at the Mescal Hornbeck Community Center, 56 Rock City Road. If you’ve never been to one, stop by, or better yet, cook a platter of sweet potatoes or a bowl of vegetables and bring it by. It will make your heart sing.
The route Kathy Anderson took to found her School for Young Artists 40 years ago this coming year was a bit circuitous, a bit of a crab-walk, but also very Woodstock in an old-town way. The Holiday in the Village parade, set for Sunday, Dec. 8 this year, will include puppets created during an after-school enrichment program with Patrick Wadden of Arm of the Sea Theater and Jodi Adams-Hill, a Saugerties school art teacher. Saugerties junior-high students created the masks, and will help bring them to life in the parade.
