Firefighters, police and military personnel in uniform lined up at the Cantine Veterans’ Memorial Complex Wednesday, September 11, to remember and honor the service people — police, firefighters, emergency medical technicians (EMTs) ambulance drivers and others who turned out to serve in the aftermath of the terror attack on September 11, 2001 and to mourn the victims.
On The Hill Antiques is a lovely antique center at 41 Broadway in the heart of Kingston’s historic waterfront. Owner Suzanne Schreter has been a fixture of Hudson Valley’s antique community for more than three decades. She took the time from a busy day to show me around one of the most fun shops in the area and to tell me a bit about her experiences running her well-regarded store.
“The water was colder than I thought it would be,” said Village of New Paltz Mayor Tim Rogers as he emerged dripping wet from the Dunk Tank at the Taste of New Paltz food festival last Sunday. One of nine elected officials, business-owners and other local “celebrities” who volunteered for the Dunk Tank, the mayor said that he got the plunge “at least 20 times” during his half-hour shift. “My daughter sunk me, so I’m disappointed in her.” Another who succeeded in hitting the target was five-year-old Asher Libolt, who didn’t seem to have any political axe to grind; “I dunked Mayor Rogers because I thought it would be fun,” he said, proudly wearing his “I Made a Splash” sticker.
Over the years, the youth program has participated in countless fundraising events, activities and programs, and all of that hard work has paid off.
Hey young writers! The City of Kingston and the Kingston Times are teaming up for an essay contest and the winner will have their work printed in this newspaper! The contest is open to youth ages 9-13 who live in the Kingston City School District.
While there was plenty to hear, see, do and eat at all three main locations — not to mention a book sale at the Gardiner Library and sidewalk pop-up shops in front of various Main Street businesses — the big news of this year’s event was the return of Majestic Park as a major scene of the action.
Sept. 14: A group of Saugerties first-responders want to memorialize not just Jack Rose, a 19-year-old Mount Marion fire department captain who died in the line of duty in 2015, but all first responders who gave their lives making their communities safer.
An armada of artworks will dock at the Saugerties Performing Arts Factory at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14 for the Chamber of Commerce’s 10th annual gala. Amidst libations and snacks, 36 painted and re-imagined sailboats will be sold to the highest bidder by locally acclaimed auctioneers Bob Siracusano and Ray Tucker of Sawyer Motors at the Ahoy Maties Gala.
Due to some helping hands and major machinery, six acres of new soccer fields are currently being built at the Field of Dreams off Libertyville Road in New Paltz for the town’s youth recreation league.
Saturday, September 14: New Paltz Kayaking is offering a special deeply discounted rate of $10 to rent a kayak for the day, for those who don’t have their own boats.
