As voting day approaches, an issue about the American flag and school board meetings has boiled over in New Paltz. Specifically, several school board members — including one standing for reelection on May 15 — choose not to stand during the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

A New Paltz farmer was seeking a retirement nest egg, and hoped to get it without selling portions of the farm off to a developer who would subdivide it. The town, county and Scenic Hudson combined to pay $387,000 to preserve the farm in perpetuity.

For the first time in well over a generation, Dave Weeks no longer holds a leadership position in the Village of New Paltz Volunteer Fire Department. Weeks opted to step down rather than run for any of the three chief positions, but he leaves community fire protection in capable hands: fifth-generation firefighter Cory Wirthmann has taken on the role of chief, with Dylan Babcock and William Buboltz as his assistants.
