Hudson Valley school districts reflect diversifying population

Looking at local numbers, a common pattern is a white population in 1995 dropping significantly, often around 15 points or so, with the largest increase found in the Hispanic population, and more modest increases in other groups. No local district we looked at saw an increase in the share of the white population or decrease in the share of the Hispanic population.

New Paltz festival celebrates addiction recovery and hope

The third annual Recovery Fest will be held this Sunday, September 22 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Field of Dreams in New Paltz. Recovery Fest, a free community event open to all, will feature live music, guest speakers, a free barbecue, information tables, outdoor games and fun activities for kids, including face-painting and a bouncy house. Recovery Fest is intended to celebrate recovery from substance use addiction and offer resources to support those who may not know where to turn. Music will be provided by Sunshine Dirty, Big Sister, Victoria Levy,Kilcool and the Doug Yoel Band.

The Kingston Land Trust will celebrate the opening of the Kingston Point rail-trail’s first phase from Jansen Avenue to Garraghan Drive with a free community block party this Saturday, September 21 from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Rondout Savings Bank parking lot at 300 Broadway in Kingston.

Peru’s legendary psychedelic cumbia band Los Wembler’s de Iquitos play BSP

Friday, Sept. 20: The Brooklyn label Barbès Records released a 17-song compilation of a then-ignored genre of psychedelic cumbia from Peru: a blend of psych/rock, surf, Afro-Latin rhythms and indigenous melodies. That album reintroduced the world to chicha music, a sound previously confined to the Amazon and the poorer neighborhoods of Lima. Los Wembler’s, who formed in 1968 in the Amazonian city of Iquitos, were responsible for some of the first hits of the genre and have enjoyed this resurgence in international interest.
