What sets the Blackboard Bistro apart from other dining places is that the staff generating the goodwill there are in large part people with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Blackboard Bistro is owned and operated by the private, nonprofit agency Arc of Ulster-Greene.
Saturday, March 17 in Kingston & Sunday, March 18 in Woodstock: Ars Choralis and the Riverview Missionary Baptist Church choir Voices of Praise will perform some of Lincoln’s favorite arias, spirituals, freedom songs, fiddle tunes and sentimental ballads. Criticized for attending the opera while the Civil War raged, Lincoln’s response was terse: “The truth is, I must have a change of some sort, or die.”
Some of the projects include new auditorium curtains, improvements to locker rooms and a basketball court, heating and lighting upgrades, and various other infrastructure improvements.
Events include a lecture on the library’s founding, a storytelling event with songs and crafts, a session for parents on how to encourage their children to become readers and writers, a library-themed film at the Rosendale Theatre, and more.
“Talking Gong” was inspired by the gong chime culture of Southeast Asia, particularly the rhythms and language of the gandingan, the Philippine Maguindanaon “talking gongs.”
The decision isn’t based on any one tragedy, but rather the general increase in suicides and overdoses, and lack of support for those affected.
Should school staff be trained in how to disarm a shooter? Could schools be made more secure? “We have to look at reality; we live in a terrifying world,” said one resident.
“It’s kind of like getting a ‘snow globe’ glimpse into everybody’s life for about five minutes. It’s interesting to have these small periods of time to meet people.”
