It took three overtimes to do it, but the New Paltz boys won their first Section 9 title in a decade with Monday night’s uber-thrilling 78-77 win over Saugerties. The Highland girls defended their Section 9 crown with a 52-31 win over Marlboro in Sunday evening’s Class B tournament final.
It was yet another interesting season in New Paltz and Highland sports.
Led by two-time double Section 9 champion Abbie Santos and a lot of great swimming by a deep, deep team, the New Paltz girls won their first-ever Section 9 title on Saturday, November 4 at Valley Central, cruising over second place Monroe-Woodbury 302-250. Long-time coach Don Bartlett was chosen as OCIAA Coach-of-the-Year.
New Paltz moves on to play number two seed Spackenkill – who the Huguenots defeated handily early in the season – on Saturday, October 28 at 3 p.m. at either Dietz Stadium in Kingston or Faller Field in Middletown.

So, how did the one-time MHAL wrestling champion and MHAL 110 hurdles and pole vault champion, and noted free-spirit, come to be the guiding force behind a tech program for kids?
Schenker laughs. “It was unusual.”
One could say that Glenn Eckert had the good fortune to step into a great cross-country program on a remarkable run; or one could say that Eckert stepped into the New Paltz cross country program and made it even better. I’ll opt for the latter.
“It (poetry) just hits me, an image or a phrase, and it starts to write itself. Most of my ideas come just when I’m going off to sleep, when my conscious-mind, my analytical and logical mind, is dozing off and sleep brings things, other things, out, brings things to a head, the unconscious, and I write them down…”
